George Washington's Visit
In 1791, as George Washington was completing his last term as our first president, he took a trip through this area making many stops along the way. His plan was to thank his supporters and to listen to his constituents concerns. One of his stops was here in what was then known as the Waxhaws, to speak with the local indigenous people about their concerns. While here he stayed with a local prominent family, the Crawfords, and although the Crawford home is no longer there, a SC Highway Historical marker has been placed in the proximate location.
