Van Wyck Country Club
An organizational meeting was held on September 16, 1927, for the Van Wyck Country Club. The clubhouse on 16.5 acres of land was deeded to Everette P. Nisbet, W. N. Ashe, C. R. Yoder, S. L. Thompson, W. H. Moore, Trustees, and their successors, by Dr. James Douglass Nisbet in 1927. It is to be kept and held in trust as a memorial to Dr. John Newton and Mary Jane Nisbet and used as a social center and playground by the members.
The clubhouse has a general reception room, club room, dining room, kitchen, and two restrooms on the first floor. The second floor has two locker rooms.
The best known activities of the club are the semi-annual picnics that are held in May and September. These have been yearly events since May of 1928.
Dr. and Mrs. John Newton Nisbet were the parents of Dr. J. Douglas Nisbet who donated the club in their memory. Dr. John N. Nisbet purchased the property in 1859. His first home on the property was burned by ex-slaves after the Civil War. His second home is part of the present building and was built around 1866. In 1890, he moved to the Ivy Place where he and his wife lived until their deaths. The property then passed to his son, Dr. J. Douglas Nisbet.
